Over the past two decades the subjects of my large and small scale works have been either iconographic or deeply personal. In general they explore the overlap between the metaphors of religious or poetic art, the conventions of more recent realist paintings, and my own experience of life, love, intimacy and anxiety Often working in unconventional paint media like latex house paint, spray paint, or various asphalt-based commercial substances, my portraits of family members and close friends often refer also to Christian or neo-classical concerns. These contextual shifts are a jumping-off point for painterly meditations about the integration of tactile and psychological experience, in terms of the realities of the contemporary world.
Douglas Max Utter was born in 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio and currently lives with his two children in Cleveland Heights, OH. His paintings and prints have been shown in more than 100 exhibitions, including twenty six one person shows in Cleveland, Augsburg, Germany, New York, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. He has received three Ohio Arts Council Fellowships in the areas of Painting and Art Criticism. New Art Examiner, Dialogue, Northern Ohio Live, Free Times, Ceramics Monthly, and Fiber Arts have published his essays and reviews. Currently he is senior editor of Angle, a non profit journal of arts and culture which is available in a monthly print edition or in abbreviated form online at anglemagazine.com.
