SITO Profile - Molly Kiely

Molly Kiely has been drawing steadily since toddler-hood, but the urge to draw comix reared its unruly head in art school much to the chagrin of her professors. "God, you could at least have gone into filmmaking," her fellow classmates sneered. Undaunted, Molly has drawn 8 black and white comix, 6 of which -- Diary of a Dominatrix 1 to 3, and Saucy Little Tart 1 to 3 she not only drew but wrote as well.

Canada Customs officials are Molly's biggest fans as they seem to confiscate all copies of Diary and Saucy that come their way (to see what the fuss is all about,these books are available through the Eros imprint of Fantagraphics Books...if you're over 18, request a free catalogue: fgraphic@halcyon.com).

Her comix and illustrations have appeared on Topps trading cards and in numerous small press magazines and newspapers including Ralph: Coffee, Jazz, and Poetry (email RalphA6982@aol.com for more info); Answer Me! (for which she testified in the Bellingham obscenity trial); and Screw, the legendary xxx-rated New York City tabloid. She also produces plenty of mini-comix, jazz notecards, paper dolls, and postcards from nowhere that she selectively trades and sells through mail-order.

"Comix are a great medium to put out there whatever you're feeling and thinking...you can 'hide' behind your character or characters and be as outrageous and silly as you want -- it's your pulpit and it's your psychiatrist's couch. Eros isn't a huge publisher, but my editor gives me carte blanche...you really can't ask for much more than that."

Once a proud Canadian, Molly now lives in California relishing the fine weather and the First Amendment to the American Constitution -- a radical tome if there ever was one.
